  • Since 1899, German Shepherd dogs have been highly prized for their loyalty, bravery and intelligence. From the very first registered German Shepherd, Horand von Grafrath an exceptionally intelligent, agile dog with instinctive herding ability came a breed standard that has been preserved for over a century through careful selective breeding. These characteristics, combined with an easy going yet eager demeanor, have made German Shepherds popular world wide as service dogs and faithful companions.

  • Most people are confused about the German Shepherd family. The majority of people classify all types of shepherds under a “catch-all” German Shepherd title. There is one breed of Shepherd that has endured a great deal of adversity, which is the DDR (Deustche Demokratische Republik). To understand how this great breed came to be we must go back to World War II and understand the history of Germany. After the German Reich and the strong hold its axis’ power had were defeated in 1945, Germany’s economic and political infrastructure was ruined. This led directly to the division of Germany and to the Soviet Union closing its borders; this was the foundation of East and West Germany. The US, UK, and France later formed the Federal Republic of Germany, aka West Germany. The Soviets occupied the remainder of Germany creating East Germany, aka Deustche Demokratische Republik. Both East and West Germany were formed in 1949. This action was the beginning stage for the Cold War, which resulted in a closed door breeding program of the DDR Shepherd family from 1949 to 1990 and became the single greatest impact to the GSD breed

  • The government was in control of the DDR Shepherd breeding at that time. It determined at that time the DDR Shepherd was a military K9. Strict guidelines were set in place for the DDR breeding and only the most elite DDR’s were allowed to be bred. Such standards included were powerful, deep chested bodies, massive heads, straight long backs, supreme intelligence, and a fear inducing presence. All litters were meticulously examined for teeth, ear set, temperament, coat, etc. The DDR was surely the most elite GSD, excelling in tracking, athleticism, toughness, agility, hardiness, and the ability to withstand the most physical demand. The DDR bloodline was contained in the Berlin wall and any DDR within was held to these regulations.
It was then on June 13th, 1990 that the East German military began to dismantle the wall. That was the beginning of the union between East and West Germany. Since there was no border to patrol, most DDR’s were sold, abandoned or euthanized. It was then that the rest of the world saw the potential of this great K9 and begun searching for these bloodlines rapidly. Thanks to the many breeders of the world who helped preserve the DDR lineage, we all now can enjoy this unbelievable working dog.
